Enrollment Policies
Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Training (NMST) uses a tried and true Motorcyle Safety Foundation (MSF) curriculum to provide a safe learning environment through which the student, "YOU", can learn to ride a motorcycle, or depending upon the curriculum, improve upon your riding skills. This will be accomplished by presenting needed skills and techniques to allow YOU to practice and become proficient. Additional skills will be added in a building block approach to allow you to capture and demonstrate those skills through a series of evaluations. To accomplish this task safely and efficiently, we will insist upon certain rules and procedures being followed.
Attendance / Tardiness / Reschedule / Cancellation / Refunds
The RiderCourse in which you are enrolled is packed full of valuable information and skills to practice and acquire. As such, there is little time to spare while conducting the RiderCourse. Therefore, the following policies and procedures will be adhered to so we can maximize training time:
- Students should ensure they are available to attend the class they select. The course fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.
- Students are required to attend ALL sessions, classroom, and range in the order presented. If a session is missed, for any reason, the student will be disenrolled from the class.
- The class the Student is attending is the only class in which the Student is registered. If the Student does not attend, drops out, or misses a session and is disenrolled, no further entitlements apply. The student has paid for this and only this class.
- If the Student desires to reschedule, the Student can request a ONE-TIME reschedule no later than 14 days prior to the class date.
- If a Student is faced with a medical emergency (verification from a Doctor or Medical Facility is required), the Student MAY be enrolled in a future class or a refund MAY be issued. This is not an automatic occurrence. Each situation will be adjudicated separately.
- If a Student is late for any training session and the training has commenced, the Student will be disenrolled the same as not attending the session. However, if the RiderCoach determines the class May continue without impact, the Student may be allowed to rejoin the class and continue. The RiderCoach in charge will make that determination and his/her decision will be considered binding.
- If the Student voluntarily elects to cease training, all remaining class time is forfeited and the Student shall be disenrolled.
- If the Student, in the considered opinion of the RiderCoach(es), presents a danger to him/herself or others in the class, the Student will be counseled, and if serious enough, disenrolled from the class. All remaining class time will be forfeited. If the student returns to the training environment, the Student will be required to enroll in a complete class at the full tuition rate.
- Upon successful course completion, the Student will be issued an MSF RiderCourse Completion Card. To be successful requires the satisfactory completion of two measurement tools, a Written Examination, and a riding Skill Evaluation. If the Student is unsuccessful or does not receive a passing score in either or both, the Student may be offered one retest for the one or both unsuccessful element(s). If the Student is unsuccessful during the retest the Student may reregister and pay for a new RiderCourse to continue training. The retest must be conducted within a 30 - day period unless extenuating circumstances present themselves such as job-associated travel, medical incapacitation, or another reason. Approval to retest if over the specified time limit will be determined by the program authorities. Failure of the retest or if the retest time limit expires without a valid reason the Student May re-enroll and pay for a full course.
Preparation for Class
Specific RiderCourse preparation is identified within the NMST Website, the NMST Brochure, and the Confirmation E-Mail the Student receives acknowledging the Student has been registered in a particular RiderCourse. A RiderCourse is divided into an eCourse, Classroom sessions, and Riding or Range sessions. Different courses utilize a different combination of these tools. The RiderCourse is further divided into basic, rudimentary information and skills and more advanced information and skills. The initial portion is defined as Level 1 and the advanced portion as Level 2.
- The Student is required to complete the MSF eCourse prior to coming to class. The eCourse is a computer-based training curriculum that requires approximately three hours to complete and satisfies Level 1 training requirements. Upon RiderCourse registration, a link is issued to the registered student so the Student may access the eCourse located on the MSF-USA.org website.
- If the student is unable to complete the eCourse, an alternative is to research and complete the questions located in the back of the RiderCourse Handbook and submit written answers prior to the beginning of the class. Each RiderCourse has a different set/number of questions; e.g. the Basic RiderCourse has 175. Students must call NMST at (402)593-1564 for details about this option.
- Students are required to come prepared to ride with the proper safety equipment specified by the MSF and State of Nebraska:
- Approved Motorcycle Helmet (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218)
- Shatterproof Eye Protection (may be glasses or visor/face shield)
- Long-sleeved jacket or shirt
- Long-legged pants
- Full-fingered Gloves
- Over-the-Ankle footwear
- NMST maintains some loaner helmets, but sizes may not fit all and there may not be enough to equip everyone; therefore, it is recommended that the Student bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE).
- If the Student reports to the training site without the proper PPE, the Student will not be allowed to ride and be disenrolled by virtue of missing a session.
- Hydration is key to staying alert and safe. Water is available on the Range; however, Students are encouraged to bring their own fluids to replace lost electrolytes through perspiration. Sports drinks normally satisfy this need well.
