The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office Mental Health Crisis Support Unit seeks to provide improved public safety and service through the utilization of mental health services and providing resources to assist those with a mental illness avoid frequent contacts with law enforcement by serving as an access point for mental health treatment through community partnerships.

The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office recognizes that persons with a mental illness may have frequent contacts with law enforcement and incarceration is not a viable course of action. The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office Mental Health Crisis Support Unit strives to reduce the number and frequency of repeated contacts between consumers with a mental illness and law enforcement by providing assistance, resources, and support to persons in a mental health crisis.

The primary objectives of the MHCSU are to prevent the unnecessary arrest and incarceration of individuals with a mental illness. Handle encounters with consumers in crisis in a manner that promotes the dignity of all persons while reflecting the values of protection and safety. To reduce the number and frequency of repeat calls and overutilization of public safety resources. To work collaboratively with community partners to provide consumers access points with mental health, addiction, and social services.
